Whymper had tried in vain to persuade his friend Carrel\u00a0several times\u00a0to attempt the ascent of the Matterhorn from the Swiss side.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">When he was informed that Carrel had already started towards the summit of the Matterhorn via the normal Italian route, he decided to leave Zermatt to attempt the climb through the Swiss route. <strong>Whymper arrived first<\/strong>, but during the descent the first four climbers of the\u00a0roped party plummeted. <strong>Both routes<\/strong> for the ascent to the Matterhorn <strong>were opened<\/strong> and from that day <strong>thousands of climbers dream<\/strong> of reaching the summit of the Matterhorn.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/hello2.customcode.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/libro-vetta-monte-cervino.jpg\"> Libro Vetta del Monte Cervino, Pinterest<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\"><strong><\/p>\n<p>Cresta del Leone: the normal italian route<\/strong> <br \/><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">The normal Italian route is <strong>more difficult to climb<\/strong> than the Swiss one, despite the difference in height. \u00a0You move on more <strong>technical terrain<\/strong> where you need to be prepared to act with ease and overcome difficulties quickly.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">The Matterhorn rock\u00a0climbing via the Italian route can be divided into <strong>3 stages<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">&#8211; from <strong>Breuil-Cervinia<\/strong> (2012 m) to the<strong> Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge<\/strong> (2,802 m)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">&#8211; from the <strong>Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge<\/strong> to the <strong>Jean-Antoine Carrel Refuge<\/strong> (3,830 m)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">&#8211; from the <strong>Jean-Antoine Carrel refuge to the summit <\/strong>(4.478 m)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">The <strong>first stage<\/strong> of the Matterhorn rock climb is based on <strong>hiking<\/strong>, no technical difficulties. It is a walk of about 2 hours that from Cervinia leads up to 2,802 m passing through the <strong>small church<\/strong> of the\u00a0\u201cA<span class=\"\">lpini Battaglione Aosta&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0where there is a <strong>large cross <\/strong>in memory of Pope John Paul II. Continuing you can also admire a <strong>suggestive waterfall<\/strong>. You can save 500 meters of climbing by using the ski lifts that arrive from Cervinia to Plain Maison and then continue on foot for about 90 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-family: HelveticaNeue;\">The <strong>second stage<\/strong> of the normal Italian route is <strong>mixed<\/strong>: the <strong>first part<\/strong> is a <strong>pleasant hike<\/strong> and after a walk through gentle slopes you arrive at the <strong>Croix Carrel <\/strong>which will lead up to <strong>Colle del Leone<\/strong>, separating the Lion&#8217;s Head from the Matterhorn. From here the start of the <strong>real climbing <\/strong>that will lead up to the Jean-Antoine Carrel Refuge, <strong>managed by the guides of the Matterhorn<\/strong>.
